Pregancy and Oral Health

Good oral health is particularly important during pregnancy.

What You Can Do During Your Pregnancy for Oral Health?

Gingivitis occurs more frequently in pregnant women because of the hormonal changes that occur. Gingivitis results from plague, which has not properly removed from the teeth. It can lead to gum irritation making them tender and likely to bleed easily. It can lead to far more serious periodontal diseases.

To fight gingivitis, thoroughly brush and floss the teeth and eat a balanced diet to help keep your gums healthy.

Good nutrition is important during pregnancy for a number of reasons, including the development of your child's teeth. The baby's teeth begin to develop between the third and sixth month of pregnancy. Sufficient amounts of nutrients are needed, especially vitamins A, C and D; protein; calcium; and phosphorus. Following your physician's advice regarding your diet is the smartest plan.

Pregnant women may often have the desire to eat between meals. It's normal, but frequent snacking can lead to deposits on the teeth and resulting tooth decay. Soft, sticky, sweet foods are especially harmful and should be limited.

Keep your dentist advised of any changes in your health, any changes in your medications and any advice passed on by your physician.
