Dr. Shaun Massiah and other dental professionals gathered at the 3rd Annual National Dental Association (NDA) New Dentist Conference on July 27th in National Harbor, Maryland. Dr. Massiah was one of the panelists asked to speak about his dentistry experience and answer student questions.
NDA New Dentist Conference Panel Discussion
The conference audience included mostly dental students from around the country. The goal of the program was to provide dental students information on identifying opportunities that each specialty offers, and educate them on what is required of them to excel in each field.
Amongst the topics discussed at the panel were the characters of what makes a good general dentist, strategies of paying back student loans, working for the National Health Service in an underserved area, and choosing a General Practice Residency (GPR) versus an Advanced General Dentistry Program (AGD). Dr. Massiah also spoke about the challenges of starting one’s own practice.
When it comes to the attributes of a successful dentist, Dr. Massiah said, “Being a great dentist requires persistence, tenacity, attention to detail and being fiscally responsible.” As to starting one’s practice, he advised the students, “In the first few years of practice focus on your improving your skill level rather than aggressively paying down your student loans.”
